COLLECTING URINE FROM DOGS
URINE COLLECTION

To simplify the collection of urine, you can do the following:

Important Notes:

1. You will need from 1 tablespoon to 3 tablespoon depending on what your vet is screening for.  Check to be sure ...
2.  Vets generally request specimen from early morning.
3. Containers must be meticulously clean!
4. Getting the sample to your vet quickly is important. . . preferably within 30 minutes. Refrigerate if it's going to be an hour or two.
5.  Disposable rubber gloves is STEP 1 in proper hygiene for collecing urine.

HOME COLLECTION 'Free catch' I
The best way I've found to collect urine is to tape a small piece of sponge to the center of a large cooking spoon. Our vet team provides us with small sterile sponges in little platic bags ... made specifically for this purpose.

Attaching sponge to spoon: I use a piece of wide packing tape taped back into itself, and place it under the sponge so it just stabilizes it so it stays in the spoon. You then take your dog out on a short leash and pop that spoon under the dog as it urinates. ... (waiting just a couple seconds after the stream starts.) You might have to get the specimen from a couple or three different squats to get enough to the saturate the sponge.

You can also use a soup ladle  .... or attach a small dixie type cup to the end of a long wooden spoon and slip that under the dog as it voids.

NOTE: I used to use this method initially, but one needs to be very careful that the dog doesn't knock the urine out of the cup when they move off from the site of voiding (particularly common when the little males leg comes back down).

Other light containers or 'cups' that you can use: (clean, clean, clean) .... one section of an egg carton or margarine tub, etc.

Cystocentesis - This is when your vet inserts a sterile needle through the abdomenal wall into the bladder.... providing a pure specifimen (without contaminants from any material in the urethra or the outside air)

Catheter - This is also a vet proceedure wherein a very small tube is inserted up the urethra to allow the bladder to empty out through that tube.

Hope this helps a few folks simplify this procedure that is so helpful in detection of urinary tract infections, checking diabetes dogs, and identifying renal disease.
